Traveling Exhibit (TE) | TE History | Member Exhibitions Overview | MAA Exhibitions History

From 1989 through 2014, the Miniature Artists of America promoted public education on miniature art through a traveling exhibition of Signature Members' works that traveled to over 100 venues across the United States and once in Japan. The exhibition was accompanied by printed handouts, VHS tapes and signage in the early years. With the arrival of the digital age, the MAA TE contained everything pertaining to the society on DVDs, including the book Modern Masters of Miniature Art In America that celebrated the MAA's 25th Anniversary in 2010. The exhibit featured new works on a rotating basis every 4-5 years with the participants featured on the pages linked below.

MAA Exhibitions Overview

Miniature art is often described as "fine original art done in small scale." A commonly accepted American guideline among many of today's miniaturists is that subjects do not exceed one-sixth their natural size. Exceptions are permitted for abstractions or tiny subjects not lending themselves to the one-sixth application provided they embrace the delicate essence and spirit of miniaturism.
MAA's Inaugural Exhibit was held at the Arts Club of Washington, DC in June 1988. A second public exhibit was held in March 1989, at the Color Works Art Gallery in Hilton Head, South Carolina.
Laura Parker Schofer, past MAA president, envisioned a MAA Traveling Exhibit (TE) to tour throughout the USA educating and promoting miniature art. In 1989, Laura’s vision turned into reality when a juried MAA Traveling Exhibit was inaugurated. Her vision went beyond all expectations. A juried Traveling Exhibit of Signature Members' works was inaugurated in 1989. It has since visited cities from coast-to-coast, bringing to nearly one hundred art museums, galleries and cultural organizations the story of contemporary American miniaturism. In February 1998, the exhibit made its first trip abroad, accepting an invitation by the City of Clearwater to join its ‘Pavilion in the Sun’ at the Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan. Over 125,000 visitors passed through the Pavilion. The exhibit then opened the new millennium in January at the Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg, Florida. Fall of 2000 the exhibit was displayed at the exhibit at the 2nd World Federation Exhibition of Fine Arts in Miniature in Hobart, Tasmania, followed by a three-week appearance in the Florida World Pavilion at the Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia. The exhibit was displayed during the 3rd World Federation Exhibition of Fine Arts in Miniature in the International Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC in June of 2004. MAA Signature Members, Wes and Rachelle Siegrist, demonstrated their miniature painting techniques to the public during the exhibition.
MAA, a nonprofit organization, is dedicated to bringing recognition to artists in the vanguard of restoring this long-neglected aspect of our cultural heritage to its proper stature. It encourages artists to affiliate with major miniature societies and participate in their juried exhibits.
