MAA Artist's Work
Charles Hargraves , MAA Member since 1998
2008-2012 MAA TE Work: "Jane Blake", Oval 7.2 x 6.1 centimeters, 2⅞ x 2⅜ inches
Medium: Scrimshaw on Ivory

Biography: Charles Hargraves was born in Covington, Kentucky, but was raised in Canada from a young age. He graduated from Danforth Tech in 1947 and became a commercial artist until his retirement in 1989.

Charles has always been involved in art in one form or another. In 1960 he was asked by a friend to scratch his name into a black powder horn, and that began his interest in scrimshaw. Since that time he has been commissioned to work on all forms of ivory - man made or natural, preferring Mastodon ivory. He has no preference as to subject, since each piece is unique.
